Before buying this I read a few reviews about the horrible smell but they were in the small minority so I bought it anyway. We're sticking with it for now. They suggest letting it air out for 8 hours.
There's a little tag on the inside when you open it that says you "may" notice have a "new" smell for a while. We have a pillow top and a fitted sheet over it and that doesn't seem to reduce the smell much. Well, The smell is REALLY bad.
We let it air out for over a week and it still smells really bad. I don't know how anyone could miss it. And the word "new" is kind to say the least.
It's very comfortable however, and we can at least sleep through the smell. Maybe if a few years it will lose it's smell.
The thickness and firmness of this mattress topper is about right for me. It replaces a thicker and less firm topper I bought on Ebay. The Ebay topper eventually developed a permanent sag in the middle. This topper looks like it will last longer.
It even springs back to its original contition in the morning. I had "tired" of our extra firm Sealy Postuerpedic mattress. I never "dreamed" this foam topper would make such a difference. I do wish the Carpenter Company had not made its length and width a couple inched smaller than the mattress. Defintely worth the money.
I didn't even pay for express shipping. It probably could have used a little more time outside, but the scent did vanish within 3 days.
I had considered buying a pillow topper, but was concerned it would either flatten out or would have no loft and I would be lift in a pit of feathers still on a firm mattress. This topper is perfect.
I recently bought a sealy Cason bay mattress which is beautiful, but was quite firm and just needed some softness. I let the pad air out overnight outside.
It provides plenty of support, yet is quite soft. It contours nicely to my body and is not at all hot, which i was concerned about.
It also arrived at my door one day after purchase. I would absolutely recommend this product, I am very pleased with it and the quality of my sleep has improved exponentially.
needs to consider a cover scent). So I put it back outside for another night. After 5 days (2 outside on the balcony) and 3 on the bed, it still had a smell sort of like chocolate/turpentine which permeates all the bedding, including what you are sleeping in. I was just about to give up on it, so I sprinkled it with Arm&Hammer carpet soda and vaccumed, got a plastic zipper mattress bag and had a wonderful night's sleep on my old spare bed. The pitch was it only needed 10 hours to air out. (Mfg. I suspect the soda may bring down the topper's lifespan, however. If not for the stink problem, I'd give it a five star.
